AMALAN KEWARTAWANAN ALAM SEKITAR DI INDONESIA DAN MALAYSIA:KAJIAN KES TERHADAP AKHBAR KOMPAS DAN UTUSAN MALAYSIA

Media is the main source for the public to obtain information on environment and related issues. Environmental conditions are increasingly becoming critical and need support from various parties, including media to raise public awareness in maintaining environmental quality. Media plays an important role in generating information as a source of knowledge and awareness on the importance of preserving the environment for the future. Environmental journalism raises awareness and produce information through a variety of specific purposes in news production. The study looks at the practice of journalism in the newspaper Kompas (Indonesia) and Utusan Malaysia (Malaysia) to find, identify, assess, and analyse news coverage pattern, the process of news production, and factors that have influenced these. The comparison of these processes has been conducted between two countries. The study is guided by the Theory of Social Construction of Reality to see the construction of knowledge on the environment through the process of news production. This research methodology is a combination of quantitative and descriptive-qualitative. News content analysis, discourse analysis, participant observation of the newsroom and interview with journalists and editors of Kompas and Utusan Malaysia are used to understand the practice of environmental journalism in Indonesia and Malaysia newspapers. Results of the analysis of environmental news content from 2012 found that environmental news coverage tended not to be prioritise news. Discourse analysis on the issues of mining (Kompas) and Lynas (Utusan Malaysia) showed that each media has a discursive strategy which has referred to a particular environmental ideology. Analysis of participant observations and interviews conducted in 2013 found that the process of the environmental news coverage was influenced by routine, news organisations, media owners, and external media. In conclusion, environmental journalism practice of Kompas and Utusan Malaysia is controlled by the organisation factor that promotes the importance of media owners. This practice of journalism shapes reality from environmental news coverage. Thus, environmental information imparted by environmental journalists to the audience is in the interest of the media
